Senior Scholarships to GCU
Twenty-five Phoenix Union seniors won Students Inspiring Students Scholarships last week from Grand Canyon University. To meet the criteria for the SIS scholarship, the students need at least a 3.5 GPA, write an essay about their financial situation, and receive 100 hours of tutoring at GCU's Learning Lounge, an afterschool program with college mentors helping local high school students.
The full ride scholarship requires that they “Pay it forward,” and work in the Learning Lounge during their collegiate career.
Phoenix Union students made up half of the 50 scholarships awarded. They received the news in an unusual way. They and their parents were invited to a meeting about financial aid at GCU, and the scholarship announcements came as a surprise.
"We've lied terribly to these families. We've told them that they are here for a mandatory meeting to find out about scholarships, so they think they're here for a boring meeting about scholarship details," said Shari Stagner, GCU's Director of K-12 Outreach. Below are video clips and the list of student recipients.
