Poetry Central Winners Announced

Cristián Vega, a ninth grader from Central, won first place overall in the District poetry contest, and was honored at the 16th annual Poetry Central which took place at ASU Downtown Campus, May 3.  Her poem was entitled WarcycleAlexandra Watson from Metro Tech won the 10th grade division; Grace Dillon Moffett of Betty Fairfax took first and second places for Grade 11, and Cinthia Garcia from Maryvale won the 12th grade division, and was second overall.  Adrian Gonzalez of Central placed first in Language (other than English).

 

The  event brought 11 schools and 109 school level poetry winners  and creative writing teachers together for a day of workshops with professional writers and poets, poetry readings from students and guest writers, and an awards presentation for the winning poems and their creators.  Two of Phoenix Union’s own were among the guest poets-- Keith Brazier, an assistant principal at Camelback, who is a published poet, motion picture screenplay writer, television script writer and science teacher, and Central High School English teacher Mark Williams, who has two published novels and is authoring another currently.
