There is a new chess team in the District, and it is making its mark.  Metro’s Team Rook finished its regular season in the Charter Athletic Association with a 20-1 record and hosted the State Team Championships, April 30, and Individual Championships, May 7.  The team competed in the Arizona Scholastic Tournament, April 20-22 against teams from all over the state.  Metro won a 2nd place trophy in the opening round “Blitz” competition, and placed 4th in the overall competition  behind  nationally acclaimed Catalina Foothills and Gilbert High School  and third place Chandler Prep.  Team captain Carlos Valentin won a medal for individual performance.  Bud Denny, Danh Vu, Jesus Meza, and Du Vu were other team members.  Team Rook is coached by Social Studies teacher Ricardo Gardea.
