North Kicks off "Spread the Word to End the Word" Campaign

Posted by Community Relations Department on 4/3/2012

North High kicked off the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign, March 26 with an Assembly presented by the school’s Best Buddies Club. The goals of the campaign are to communicate to students that the “R” Word, “retard,” is derogatory and callous and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. This campaign also contributes to the school-wide goals of being a safe, bully-free, accepting place for all students. The event included guest speaker Buddy Ambassadors from Best Buddies Arizona, student skits by North Best Buddies students and a video.
Best Buddies matches students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) with other high school students and creates one-to-one friendships between them, crossing the invisible line that often separates those with disabilities from those without. North has been doing the Spread the Word campaign for three years. The school’s club has about 40 general education and special education students. The general ed students commit to a couple hours of companionship and school activities with their buddies, and one off-campus activity a month.
