When you consider how many high schools there are in Arizona, and how many high school students publishing high school newspapers, to be named the Arizona Journalist of the Year is something special.  Senior Monica Contreras of Carl Hayden was so named, by the Arizona chapter of the Journalism Education Association.   Contreras has been with Hayden’s newspaper, the Cornerstone, for four years, and is currently editor-in-chief, a leadership position in charge of organizing the staff and serving as the final editor for every story.  She has attended many workshops and conventions to improve her skills and learn new things.  This year she designed a news magazine, and worked on more videos as both videographer and editor. Monica is also in JROTC, runs track and cross country, attends community college classes on Saturdays and during the summer as part of the ACE program.  According to her advisor, Jill Jones, she has a gift for writing, a passion for journalism, and will become the first in her family to go to college.

She will receive a plaque and small scholarship from the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association, and will next compete at the national level.
