Central Students Compete at State Speech and Debate Tournament

The Bobcat Speech and Debate team competed at the Arizona Interscholastic Association 5A Conference State Speech and Debate Tournament, held at Mesquite High School, March 16-17. Rand Musaffar reached the semifinal round of Poetry Interpretation, placing among the top 14 performers in the entire state.  Nicole Mayberry was State Runner Up in Original Oratory, and placed 4th in Dramatic Interpretation.  In her career, Mayberry has reached six final rounds at the State Championships, with three 2nd Place finishes.  Her finish in Oratory also qualifies her for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions in that event, to go along with her prior qualification in Dramatic Interpretation.  Central’s coach Brian Gruman served as the State Tournament Director.

Other honors to the Speech and Debate team members are: Henry Sands awarded the degree of Distinction, and Sharay Satchell   awarded a degree of Honor from the National Forensic League Speech and Debate Honor Society in recognition of their participation in the world of Speech and Debate. Octavio Edgington was also awarded the degree of Distinction from the National Forensic League Speech and Debate Honor Society for his work over the course of the year.
