The Laveen Baseball Classic has become bigger and better as a kickoff to the high school baseball season. The third annual tournament, played February 22-25, attracted 20 teams, including nine Phoenix Union teams, and teams from as far away as Douglas, Sierra Vista and San Luis. Ball fields were used at Cesar Chavez, Betty Fairfax and Alhambra. Trevor Browne won the Division I title, while Queen Creek took the Division II/III title. This year, the tournament committee decided to honor the late North High coach Jeff Pankenier who passed away last October. The MVP award was called “The Hawk” after the former coach’s nickname. Dave Pankenier, Jeff’s brother, was present to make the presentation of the awards to Trevor Browne’s Jesus Soto, and Queen Creek’s Chad Leonard.
