Cesar Chavez’ quest for a first state title in a team sport fell one game short, when the Champions fell to Tempe Corona del Sol, 66-53 in the Division I Boys Basketball State Championship game, February 25.  It was the second time in three years that Chavez played in the title game.  The Champions finished the season 27-6, beating Sierra Vista Buena, Mesa Red Mountain, and Pinnacle in the tournament, before taking on the top-seeded Aztecs.  It is the fifth year in a row that a Phoenix Union basketball team has played in a state championship game.  The South Mountain girls won state in 2008, North boys in 2009 and 2010 (over Chavez), and Betty Fairfax in 2011.
