Carl Hayden JROTC Rifle Team Competed in 2012 Army JROTC Service Championships

Carl Hayden’s JROTC  Rifle team competed in the 2012 Army JROTC Service Championships in Anniston,  Alabama, February  8-12, finishing 14th in the nation.  This competition started last November with 214 teams and 2150 shooters stretching as far east as Germany and as far west as Guam, Japan and Hawaii.  Captain Alan Rodriguez, a junior in his second year with the rifle team, medaled, finishing 15th, and received a Junior Distinguished Shooter Badge.  He also qualified to shoot in the All Services match, March 22-24 in Anniston, Alabama.   David Nieto finished 24th, and he may qualify for the All Services event, as well.     Other team members are Kevin Chavez, 60th place, Yara Hernandez,118th and Nestor Alvarez, 148th.  Hernandez and Alvarez are first-year shooters.  The team scored 4151 points out of 4800 possible points.  .  The team competes in the Sporter Three-Position Air Rifle division.   According to Cordero-Torres, Sporter means the rifle and equipment costs are minimal compared to what the Olympic shooters use, although some of the shooters that were in this competition will be competing at the Olympic trials this month.  The Hayden team is coached by Sergeant First Class John Cordero-Torres
