The Champions hosted the Region II Academic Decathlon, February 3-4, and it turned into a battle of Baseline Road, before South Mountain High topped the two-time defending champs.  Boulder Creek came in a distant third in the 28-team competition.  Chavez qualified for the State Decathlon at Red Mountain High School, March 9-10.  Their team score of 37,068 is 8th-best in the state.  Chavez and South dominated the medals.  Jessica He and Brian Diaz finished 1-2 in overall points scored in the Scholastic Division, and Liliana Espinoza won the silver in overall points in Honors Division.

Seven of the nine students captured individual medals, and the team took second place in the Super Quiz Relay.  Diaz won seven medals, including gold in Music, Art, Economics and Super Quiz, while Jessica He had six silver and a gold in Interview, where she shared the Most Outstanding Interview Trophy with three other girls who had perfect 1,000-point scores. Other medalists were Jesus Guzman and Ray Villariz in Honors; Lisa Mai in Scholastic and Karla Martin in Math.
