South Mountain’s Andres Avelar placed second in the 5A State Wrestling Championships, February 11 at Prescott Valley.  The 106-pounder advanced to the championship match, before losing to an opponent from Deer Valley.  Avelar finished with a 47-6 mark this year.

South’s step team, the “Ice Cold Souljahs” performed at the Phoenix Suns-Chicago Bulls game February 10.      The students received compliments before and after their performance on their awesome costumes and their behavior.

Six months of South Mountain Art magnet student visual arts and reflective writings were showcased and celebrated during a reception, February 10 at the Fletcher Library on the campus of ASU West.   One hundred-eighty South Mountain art students, teachers and professional artists were in attendance.  The community collaboration was developed by the Cultural Arts Coalition.  Eight of the students had their stories recorded for an upcoming documentary on this partnership.    Art teachers Jeff Kunes and Erik Erspamer organized the student projects and the trip to the exhibit.
