Cesar Chavez: Finished 4th in the 40-school State Academic Decathlon

Cesar Chavez finished 4th for the second year in a row in the 40-school State Academic Decathlon, March 10-11 at ASU West.  Six Phoenix Union teams qualified for state.  Canyon del Oro won the title for the fourth consecutive year, followed by Hamilton and Westwood. 

Chavez, ranked 2nd in the state after winning Region II, won seven medals, led by Rodrigo Terrazas, who had the second highest overall score in the Scholastic division.  Terrazas also tied for gold in Economics, tied for gold in Science, and had bronze in Social Science and bronze (tied) in Literature.  Other medalists for the Champions were Gerardo Nino Pozos, gold in Varsity Social Studies and bronze (tie) in Varsity Economics.  Victor Hernandez, bronze (tied) in Scholastic Economics.


Pino was 7th and Karrecia Crawley was 8th in overall scoring in the Varsity division, and  Alyssa Turner was the top PUHSD Honors scorer, finishing 14th best in that division.


Since 2010, Cesar Chavez has finished in the top 10 at state seven times in eight years (two 9th place, three 7th place and two 4th place) under coach William Kibler.
