April Fools’ Day was anything but for a couple of Alhambra students. Dulce Carreon was one of the first three students in the state to receive Colangelo Scholarships to attend Grand Canyon Univesity’s Colangelo College of Business, named after Phoenix sports icon Jerry Colangelo. The four-year scholarships, valued at $66,000 was presented to Carreon April 1, when College of Business Dr. Randy Gibb, the GCU mascot “Thunder” and an entourage of well-wishers surprised her in class, April 1. Carreon thought it was an April Fools’ Day, but she has had her sights set on GCU, utilizing its Learning Lounge and attending events at the neighborhood campus.

“Even if I hadn’t gotten the scholarship, I was determined to find a way to go there,” said Carreon, who will major in business management with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.

Also on April 1, Barbra Olachea learned that she was accepted to Dartmouth University, and awarded an annual scholarship of $65,000.
