Phoenix Union is one of three districts nationwide selected to host a “Peer-to-Peer” jazz education program, April 15-17, presented by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Jazz guitarist Bobby Broom, jazz vocalist Charenee Wade and five musicians from the Booker T. Washington High School for the Arts in Dallas will combine performances with educational information at Betty Fairfax High School, April 15, North High School, April 16 and South Mountain High School, April 17. Each school visit will include an assembly program featuring a musical performance for all students, followed by jazz workshops for each school’s jazz band and choir with the visiting student performers playing alongside and sharing ideas with their Arizona counterparts. The weeklong tour begins in Tucson and includes a concert open to the public April 16 at The Nash at 7 and 9 p.m. April 16. The assembly at North, at noon on April 16, will also be a media event, with several dignitaries, including the Mayor and the Governor invited.
