Richard Rogers had a surprise visit to his tenth-grade English class, March 10 when Channel 3 team came to his class to announce that he was a Silver Apple Award winner this year. It wasn’t a surprise to one of his students, Seth Matsueda, who nominated him. Rogers is an English teacher, who has been at Carl Hayden since 1988, starting as a student teacher and then an ELL teacher. Rogers is one of eight teachers to receive a Silver Apple Award this year, from over 1000 nominations. The nominations were categorized by grade: K-3rd; 5th-8th, and 9th-12th. A five-person panel selects the winners based on students’ written statements. Matsueda knows how to nominate- his fifth grade teacher also won the Silver Apple Award. Matsueda is interested in coding, is on the Falcons Robotics team, and hopes to attend MIT after high school.
