Four Phoenix Union Schools Compete in the 40-School Arizona Academic Decathlon

Four Phoenix Union schools competed in the 40-school Arizona Academic Decathlon, March 13-14 at ASU Polytechnic. Cesar Chavez finished 9th, its fifth top 10 finish in the last six years. Maryvale was 19th, just ahead of Alhambra in 20th, and Betty Fairfax placed 34th. Individually, Yasmin Cabrera of Alhambra won a gold medal in Science in the Scholastic Division. Chavez’ Cristian Buelna won bronze in Honors Science, and Julio Espinoza of Chavez took bronze in Varsity Science. In Language and Literature, Marco Mares of Chavez took bronze in the Scholastic division. Maryvale’s Paola Machado earned a bronze in Economics in the Scholastic Division. Overall, Buelna was 28th in Honors (of 119 decathletes); Machado was 14th overall in Scholastic; and Chavez’ Varsity competitors were equally impressive among the field of 113 Varsity students- Marco Mendoza (12th) Alize McClure (14th ) and Espinoza (15th).
