Hunter Hazelton - Betty Fairfax Was One of the Three top-Scoring Students at the Poetry Out Loud Central Region Competition

Hunter Hazelton was one of the three top-scoring students at the Poetry Out Loud Central Region competition, February 28, and he is headed to the State Finals. He will join three students from the Northern and Southern Region, March 12 at the Herberger Theatre for the finals. The winner of the state competition will represent Arizona at the National Finals in Washington, D.C., where the winner receives $20,000. Hazelton is coached by Fairfax English teachers Kate Zinke and Victoria Robertson.

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition, sponsored by ASU’s Young Writers Program. The 19 regional finalists included students from North, South Mountain and Maryvale, as well.


Betty Fairfax High School supporters can help raise money for academic scholarship by
participating in the 8th Annual Stampede Scramble Golf Tournament, April 4, at the
Southern Ridge Golf Club in Laveen. The school is seeking sponsors and golfers to contribute to
a fund that benefits graduates as they move to post-secondary education. The tournament includes
a gift bag and shirt, BBQ Dinner, contests and prizes.
