Fernando Cortes Betanzos is among the only 285 students worldwide who earned every point possible on their Advanced Placement exam last spring. He answered every multiple-choice question correctly and earned full points on each of the essays in the free-response section of the AP Spanish exam. Each year, approximately 4 million AP Exams are taken by nearly 1.5 million U.S. public high school students. According to the College Board, it is very rare for a high school student to earn every point possible on the exam.

“Fernando is a brilliant student who will continue to achieve great things in life. I’m sure that this is the first of many great accomplishments that he will have,” Principal Juan Nuñez said.

Betanzos’ AP Spanish teacher is Dr. Heidi Garcia.

“North has several AP teachers, such as Dr. Garcia, who are dedicated to increasing academic achievement for their students and work tirelessly to bring more rigor into the classroom, “ Nuñez said.

Students who succeed in AP courses are not only more likely to succeed in college, but have the chance to save a significant amount of time and money by earning college credit or placement.
