Chavez’ Academic Decathlon Team Headed to State Decathlon for the Ninth Straight Year

Chavez’ Academic Decathlon team is headed to the State Decathlon for the ninth straight year, after finishing second in the Region II Decathlon, February 6-7 at Thunderbird High School. For the second year in a row, the Champions finished just behind Boulder Creek High School, the top-ranked school in the state. Chavez also came in second to Boulder Creek in the Super Quiz Relay. The team’s total score of 39,931 was one of the highest ever recorded by a Chavez team.
All nine students won individual medals, and all nine finished among the top ten students in overall scores for their respective divisions-Honors, Scholastic and Varsity. Abraham Hernandez of Chavez scored 7,170, second-best among Honors students, and teammate Cristian Buelna was in third in Honors with 7,149 points.  Marco Mendoza was the best Varsity division scorer, and Julio Espinoza won the silver in Varsity overall.

Hernandez won a bronze in economics, a bronze in math, a bronze in science, a bronze in history.  Buelna won silver in economics, a gold in history. Mendoza took gold in economics, a silver in math, a gold in music, a silver in science, a bronze in speech and a bronze in history.     Espinoza won a bronze in art, a bronze in math, a gold in science. 

Other winners included Benjamin Kibler,   gold in essay;  Jasmine Lebron, gold in art, a bronze in music, a bronze in science;  Alize McClure for a gold in interview and a silver in music;  Marco Mares for a gold in music; Ramona Cordova for a silver in interview, a gold in speech (and best speech trophy of the competition)

The State Academic Decathlon is March 13-14 at ASU Polytechnic campus.
