The 31st Annual Greater Phoenix Music Festival took place, January 9-10 at Camelback High School, bringing together the best high school and junior high school students in town for band, orchestra and percussion. An honors band of 81 students, honors junior high band of 90 students representing eight partner districts, 27 orchestra students and a 17-student high school percussion ensemble rehearsed together for the first time Friday, and performed a concert Saturday evening.

The festival was sponsored again this year by the Phoenix Union Foundation for Education, which provided funding for all of the clinicians.

“This is the greatest cost of the festival, and their support has enabled us to hire the high quality clinicians that we do. Our clinicians were top notch – Rick McEnany (Fine Arts Specialist for the Clark County School District, Nevada), Dennis Smith (teacher and Fine Arts Specialist for Tempe Elementary), Chelsea Peele (Orchestra director from Smoky Hill High School in Denver, Colorado) and Alex Wier (Percussion Performance Doctoral Candidate at ASU). All of the students had a wonderful experience, loved their clinicians, and learned so many new skills and concepts, and attendance at the performance was great,” the District’s Art Content Specialist Becky Vogel said.
