Governing Board Elects New President and Welcomes New Members

Lela Alston was nominated and unanimously affirmed as the Phoenix Union High School Governing Board President for 2015 at the January 8 meeting, succeeding Randy Schiller, who had been the president for the past two years. Laura Pastor will continue to serve as the Board Clerk. Alston was elected to the Board as an At-Large member in 2008, and is in her second term. She is also a member of the Arizona House of Representatives (District 15), elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 and 2014. It is her second stint in the State Congress, having served as a senator for 18 years, from 1976-94. A Phoenix native and Phoenix Union High School alumnus, Alston taught Family and Consumer Science in the District for 34 years at West, Maryvale, Alhambra, Metro Tech and Bostrom High Schools. The January Governing Board meeting was also the first for new members Stephanie Parra (District 3) and Stanford Prescott (District 2.)
