Central High School’s JROTC Instructor First Sergeant Ronnie Hurt Receives Award

Central High School’s JROTC instructor First Sergeant Ronnie Hurt was awarded the District VFW/City of Phoenix VFW Chapter Citizenship Education Teacher Award, by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9400, recognizing Teacher Excellence in Citizenship. 1SG Hurt will now proceed to the VFW state level competition. The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism, regardless of classroom subject, are prime candidates for this award. The judging criteria include citizenship modeling and involvement, innovation, resources and passion. 1SG Hurt has been with Phoenix Union since 2006. This is the first time a PUHSD JROTC instructor has been recognized for this award.
