Maryvale’s Music Department made its annual visit to the District office, December 8, to perform its holiday show. The advanced choir and advanced guitar ensembles were ending a 15-show schedule over seven days, which included shows at churches, businesses and retirement communities. The shows help the program raise funds for an extensive spring schedule. They will perform at New Mexico State University in January, and tour the Pacific Coast Highway, from San Diego to San Francisco, with shows along the way in March. In April they will be in Washington D.C., for a Heritage Festival, and in May, the two guitar ensembles will be featured at a guitar festival in Nebraska. Instructor James Yancey used to teach guitar and choir, but a former student of his, Amanda Taylor (Class of 2007) has returned to the school as a first-year music teacher, taking over the choirs. Yancey has 240 guitar students in his classes, most of whom have never played a guitar until high school.
