Metro Tech Evening school English Teacher Dan Hull Wins the Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award

Evening school English teacher Dan Hull won the Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award for Creative Writing, November 21, at the Phoenix Center for the Arts. The Mayor’s Arts Awards serve to identify outstanding leaders in six areas; Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, Dance, Public Art, and Creative Writing. Winners were chosen based on the criteria of innovation, impact, and integration. There were 250 local artists nominated for this award. Hull’s artistic focus is live storytelling and creating spaces for storytelling events.

This year he was also number seven on the New Times list of top 100 artists in Phoenix, voted Best Storytelling MC in the New Times Best of Phoenix 2014 which described him as “the architect of downtown Phoenix’ storytelling scene.”

Hull has performed across the country, and he hosts a monthly open mic night called Yarnball.

“My passion is to continue writing and growing the live storytelling scene here in Phoenix as well as creating new storytelling projects with our students,” he said.

Hull has taught in Phoenix Union for 23 years.
