Maryvale alumnus Alfredo Estrella, a staff sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps, was recently recognized as the Marine Corps Reservist of the Year in Quantico, Virginia. Estrella, who graduated from Maryvale in 2003, is the office manager for Aviation Logistics Division and Liaison to the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group Philippines. He was deployed to the Philippines to provide humanitarian relief to aid and assist survivors following Typhoon Haiyan, which caused catastrophic destruction. His award was a statue of the flag raising at Iwo Jima.

“Most people when they hear they are receiving an award, they do not feel worthy of the award. I never thought I would be selected out of the thousands of Marine reservists,” Estrella said.

Reading about impactful Marines is a hobby of his, and he aims to emulate great marines of the past, said a Marine Corps article.
