Cesar Chavez Wins the Phoenix Union Academic Decathlon scrimmage

Cesar Chavez won the Phoenix Union Academic Decathlon scrimmage, November 14-15, with 15 team members collecting 49 medals, including 13 gold medals. The Champions scored 37,630 points to second place Sierra Vista Buena’s 35,256. Maryvale finished third. Six Chavez decathletes were among the top scorers in their divisions. Marco Mares in the Scholastic Division took gold in the 10-event total; Alize McClure was the high scorer in the 10-events for Varsity Division. Abraham Hernandez in Honors, Ramona Cordova in Scholastic and Marco Mendoza in Varsity all won silver medals for the 10-event total, while Christian Buelna took the bronze in Honors for the 10-event scoring. McClure also won the medal for most outstanding interview.

Chavez will next compete in a decathlon in Sierra Vista in preparation for the Regionals in February. Chavez has finished in the Top 10 in State, four of the last five years.
