Metro Tech Students Compete in Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge

Metro Tech had five teams at the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, October 31 at the Kierland Resort. The five-student teams placed 6th, 9th, 13th 39th and 45th. The students were given $500,000 to invest in the stock market and the competition simulated 60 days of trading. Students created investment portfolios and analyzed market trends. Throughout the competition students received updates on world events and industry developments and evaluated how this would impact stock values and the market. How did they do? The best Metro team had a 105.2 return on investment (ROI), turning its net worth into $1,025,975. The next best Metro team turned $500,000 into $910,400 and the third-highest team had almost a 72% ROI, finishing with $859,347. At one point in the competition, Metro had two teams in the top five, but the market had an adjustment and they dropped. Desert Vista has won the event six of the last eight years,

“I have to find their strategy,” teacher Debbie Cross said. “The kids had a great time and learned a lot.”
