Both the Metro Tech boys and girls teams won State Cross Country Championship for the Canyon Athletic Association (CAA) November 1 at Tempe’s Kiwanis Park. The girls won with a score of 24-36 against runner-up Anthem Prep. It is the first girls’ athletic state title in Metro history. They were led by team MVP and three-time all-state performer senior Basma Idris who finished in 5th place, while four other Metro runners finished among the top 13. Senior Yesenia Gonzalez medaled in the top ten, sophomore Sharon Snyder was 11th; Sonia Lopez - 12th and freshman Leslie Rojas -13th.

The boys won 49-63 against runner-up Trinity High School from Prescott. Metro Tech overcame the early season loss of their #1 runner due to illness and then team MVP, senior Josue Hernandez suffered from dehydration and fell to 27th after leading halfway thru the race. Stepping up for the Knights was sophomore Arturo Rodriguez who was awarded a 5th place medal. He was followed by senior Gabe Higuera, junior Luis Garcia, junior Gustavo Ortega, Hernandez and sophomore Arturo Romero.

Phil Kohm coaches the boys, and Anthony Young, who has served as a volunteer assistant coach for almost ten years at four different PUHSD schools, was named the 2014 CAA Girls' Coach of the Year. This is believed to be the 1st Female State Title in Metro Tech History.
