The Cesar Chavez Marching and Drum Line competed in the Division II State Marching Festival at Hamilton High School Saturday. The band received a rating of "Excellent" and the drum line received a “special caption” for the drum line/percussion section.  Competitions are judged in five different categories – Music, Visual, General Effect, Percussion, and Auxiliary (Color guard). The groups with the top two scores in each category receive a caption award for being outstanding at that aspect of marching band. The Chavez drum line received a rating of “Superior,” recognized as being one of the best in the state and it scored within a few points of  1st place overall for the entire competition.

Alison Brightwell-Balot is the director of percussion at Chavez. Under her direction, the drum line has captioned at every competition it has attended, including the State Marching Festival. This is the fourth year in a row the Chavez drum line has captioned at the State Marching Festival.

“This is quite an accomplishment for the Cesar Chavez drum line and shows the immense talent and passion for music these students have,” Brightwell-Balot said.
