Phoenix Union’s Franklin Police and Fire High School was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2014 by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan September 30th. Franklin was one of only four Arizona Schools named, among the 287 public and 50 private schools in the nation.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. Franklin is an Exemplary High Performing School, based on state assessments or nationally normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also considered.

The small specialty school of 310 students that specializes in Law Enforcement and Firefighting Career and Technical Education programs, as well as a full high school curriculum, has been a high-performing school, earning an “A” status each of the last four years, according to Arizona’s A-F Accountability labels. It was recently cited as a Best High School Silver School by the U.S. World and News Report, putting it among the top 1800 schools in the nation among almost 20,000 public high schools, and 32nd best high school in Arizona. The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) recognized Franklin as an Arizona Higher Performing School, exceeding expectations in college and career readiness. It is also a “Beat the Odds School,” as designated by the Center for the Future of Arizona. In 2014 AIMS, 100% of Franklin sophomores passed the reading exam, and 99% passed writing last spring. The school’s most recent four-year graduation rate is 95%, and the small graduating class last year earned over $2 million in scholarships.

The Department of Education invites Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in every state and selection is determined by the number of students and schools in each jurisdiction.  Franklin submitted an application at the request of the Arizona Department of Education.

The other Arizona Blue Ribbon Schools are Benson Primary School, Mesquite Elementary, Vail and Reid Traditional Schools’ Valley Academy, a K-12 charter school in Phoenix.
