Sarah Dendy of North High School was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit semifinalists qualify by being among the highest-scoring entrants in each state in the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT.) The 16,000 semifinalists this year represent less than one percent of the 1.4 million juniors from over 22,000 high schools who take the PSAT. National Merit Finalists are highly coveted as prospective students to every college and university in the country.

Dendy is ranked third out of over 550 seniors at North, with an un-weighted grade point average (GPA) of 4.857.  Her interests range from theatre and art to animals. She has performed in five school plays and is a member and award-winner with the International Thespian Society. She has been featured in the school’s annual art show and National Arts Society and has written, illustrated and published web comics. Dendy also has a passion for animals, volunteering at a horse sanctuary, serving on the Phoenix Zoo Conservation Team, and she is an assistant bird keeper at the zoo. The International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate has an impressive list of potential colleges, including Oxford, Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell and Swarthmore. She would like to major in animal biology, zoology or genetics, and her career ambitions include professional artist or illustrator, animator or scientist, involving animals. Dendy’s brother was a National Merit Scholar two years ago, but Dendy has had her sights set on matching her brother. She actually outscored her brother on a PSAT as a sophomore, but couldn’t qualify as a semifinalist until she was a junior.  Her second PSAT score was even higher.

About 90% of National Merit Scholarship semifinalists become finalists, according to the NMSC.   Since 1990, North High has had 94 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists and finalists.  Joining Dendy as a National Merit Scholar semifinalist is Mackenzie Kong-Sivert of Bioscience.
