South Mountain High School Honored as an Arizona Civic Engagement School

South Mountain’s Social Studies Department was honored as an Arizona Civic Engagement School by the Arizona Department of Education’s Excellence in Civic Engagement Program (ECEP) for the 2013-2014 school year. The school was recognized at a ceremony, appropriately on Constitution Day, September 17. Principal LaCresha Williams, Law Magnet teacher Andrea Sargent and social studies teacher Charlie Diaz attended. Rafael Lopez, a senior in the school’s aerospace magnet, gave a two minute speech on the personal importance of civic engagement. In the first year of the program, South Mountain was recognized as a School of Merit and this year it moved up to one of nine Schools of Distinction. Three schools earned Schools of Excellence.
