Five of Phoenix Union’s top teachers will host legislators during the Take your Legislator to School Week, September 15-19. All five are National Board Certified teachers. At North High, Spanish teacher Dr. Heidi Garcia will host Representative Katie Hobbs from District 24; and English teacher Joyce Donaldson will meet former and returning District 24 Representative Ken Clark. Maryvale English teacher Carrie Deahl will be shadowed by incoming District 29 Representative Ceci Velasquez; Franklin Police and Fire English teacher Heidi Bonafante will have Representative Katie Hobbs of District 24 come to campus, and Alhambra Art teacher Christina Yoder will entertain Senator Robert Meza from District 14 and Representative Debbie McCune Davis of District 14.

The Arizona Educational Foundation, Arizona K12 Center, Arizona Education Association, and Rodel Foundation have joined together to launch and support this initiative. The goal is for highly effective teachers to provide legislators with an authentic one-day experience of what transpires in Arizona classrooms.

“It is my hope that I will build an ongoing, sustainable relationship with the lawmaker so that when deliberating on education policy, they consider the ultimate impact on teachers and students and I become their “go-to” teacher on education issues.” Donaldson said.
