South Mountain’s Step Team, “Ice Cold Souljahs” won a National Step Team competition, “Break the Stage,” in Atlanta, in June, competing against 19 other teams from New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Washington, D.C., South Carolina and Virginia.

“Break the Stage” is a national step league with city, regional and national levels.
“To be the only team represented from the west coast, and to win over teams from the South and the East coast where stepping has deep roots makes this title all the more monumental,” team sponsor Safiyyah Johnson, South’s Exceptional Student Services (ESS) Instructional Leader said.

The team is coached by Marvlyn Jones, a community liaison, and Denesha Hardson, a student liaison at South.

The team also visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. home and historical site, and toured Ebenezer Baptist Church. They took in a laser light show at Stone Mountain National Park, and toured Morehouse and Spellman Universities, famous Historically Black Colleges in Atlanta.
