Posted by Community Relations on 8/20/2014

South Mountain is one of 27 public schools across Arizona recognized as Arizona Civic Engagement Schools by the Arizona Department of Education’s Excellence in Civic Engagement Program (ECEP) for the 2013-2014 school year. In the first year of the program, South Mountain was recognized as a School of Merit and this year it moved up to one of nine Schools of Distinction. Three schools earned Schools of Excellence.

ECEP recognizes and supports the important role schools play in ensuring that students are informed and engaged citizens. ECEP identifies schools that demonstrate knowledge and effective implementation of the following six proven practices in civic learning: classroom instruction in civics & government, history, economics, geography, law and democracy; service learning linked to classroom learning; experiential learning; learning through participation in models and simulations of democratic processes and procedures; guided classroom discussion of current issues and events; and meaningful participation in school governance.

South Mountain and its Social Studies Department will be honored at the Civic Engagement School Recognition Ceremony, on Constitution Day, September 17.
