Maryvale received a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, to have poet Myrlin Hepworth   serve as an artist in residence for seven weeks, once a week.   He kicked off his stay at Maryvale with six performances in the lecture hall, March 25.  He will work once a week with English and History classes through May 13.   Students were captivated by his rapid-paced, hip-hop style, and personal and passionate themes.  Hepworth received his degree from ASU in English and visits nearly 30 high schools each year, doing workshops on writing and poetry.  He has competed on and coached Poetry Slam teams here in Phoenix, and has released a collection of poems and recently released his first hip-hop mixtape.
