Maryvale to Host Youth Town Hall

Maryvale hosted a Youth Town Hall on the impact of teen dating violence, February 4.  As part of the city’s Paint Phoenix Purple Domestic Violence campaign and to kick off National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, the town hall brought more awareness to abusive relationships that impact adolescent development and may cause long term negative behavioral and health consequences.  Violent relationships can carry dangerous patterns into future relationships.  One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, and one in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

As part of the campaign, Phoenix Union held a district-wide poetry contest with final judging taking place February 12.  The poetry will be on display at City Hall and published in a publication for the campaign.  Schools are holding resource fairs with the city’s Domestic Violence Youth Education Taskforce, and schools may choose to present the “In Their Shoes” curriculum that uses an interactive activity where students navigate their way through situations based on choices they make.
