The Phoenix Union High School District is participating in Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October with the City of Phoenix and its Paint Phoenix Purple campaign.

Taped Public Service Announcements will air at each campus throughout the month, a Teen Dating Violence Awareness Art contest exclusively for Phoenix Union students is being held in partnership with the city’s Domestic Violence Youth Education Taskforce, Resource Fairs will be hosted by four campuses, as well as a Youth Town Hall, and just for fun, schools will take part in a lunchtime Flash Mob on October 18.

The PSA campaign features Mayor Greg Stanton and city council members providing startling facts about domestic violence and refers victims or those who know victims to contact the National Domestic Violence hotline at (602) 379-SAFE (7589).   Among the facts: 50,000 domestic violence calls are made to 911 every year in Phoenix; one in four women in Arizona will experience domestic violence; one in five teens will experience dating abuse in our state; in Arizona, one or more children witness a domestic violence incident every 44 minutes.

Cash prizes of up to $300 will be given to the first, second and third place art poster contest winners, which will be announced at an October 18 press conference with the mayor.   The first place winner will have his/her poster design printed on t-shirts for the February National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month campaign.  Submitted student artwork will be displayed at City Hall atrium area.

Resource Fairs will be hosted by the school community liaisons at North High, October 16; Trevor Browne, October 17; Camelback, October 18 and Carl Hayden, October 25.  A Youth Town Hall, open to all students and parents from Phoenix Union and partner school districts, is scheduled for October 29 at Alhambra High School.

Flash mob dances, choreographed to a medley of the songs, “Survivor” and “I Will Survive”, are being organized at several campuses on October 18 to coincide with the Mayor’s Paint Phoenix Purple press conference.
