PUHSD Student Wins City of Phoenix 2013 Outstanding Young Woman of the Year

Genesis Miranda, a junior at Betty Fairfax High School was named the City of Phoenix 2013 Outstanding Young Woman of the Year at a luncheon, April 18 at Phoenix Country Club.

Miranda, representing District 8, joined Parth Patel from North Canyon High School as the citywide winners.  They each received a $2,000 cash award.   

Hundreds of students applied for the award. Applicants submitted essays, transcripts and a letter of recommendation. They were interviewed by a panel that included representatives of each of the event sponsor organizations. The winners were selected for outstanding community service and commitment to excellence in all areas of their lives.

Eight other Phoenix Union students were among the 16 students named Outstanding Young Men and Women for each of the eight city council districts.  They were Jose Pardo, a senior at Camelback High from District 1;   Samantha Su Taylor, a senior at Bioscience High School from District 2;  Erika Banuelos, a junior at North High and Gerardo Calderon, a senior at Bioscience from District 4;  Zuri Torres, a senior at North High from District 5; Maria Ricco Rodriguez, a senior at Trevor Browne High and  Jose Lopez, a senior at Maryvale High from District 7 and  Elliot Beltran, a senior at North High from District 8.  Each of the district winners received a $250 cash award.  All of the winners invited the teacher who inspired them the most, to the awards luncheon.
