North High had three students nominated for the 2013 City of Phoenix Outstanding Young Man and Young Woman of the Year.  Erika Banuelos, Zuri Torres and Elliot Beltran were nominated from their respective city council districts to vie for the citywide award, which was presented April 18 at the 27th annual awards luncheon.

Banuelos, a junior representing District 4, is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program and has a 4.0 GPA. She is vice president of the National Honor Society and participates in the French Club, Interact Club, Robotics, marching band and cross country team. She has volunteered for two years at the Growhouse Community Garden in Roosevelt Row and at St. Vincent de Paul, serving meals, conducting intake interviews and helping in the Dream Center, an area for children to play and complete their homework.  Banuelos plans to study aeronautical/aerospace engineering in college.

The District 5 nominee, senior Zuri Torres, is enrolled in the IB program and is in the top three percent of her senior class. She also serves as the president of the Interact Club, Rotary International’s service club for young people. Torres’ future plans include college and a career as a pediatric neurologist.

Beltran, nominated from District 8 is a senior IB student, as well.   Outside of the classroom, he is a member of the band and plays sports. He also participates in community clean ups through the Wake Up club, and volunteers with St. Mary’s Food Bank. Beltran’s future plans include becoming an engineer.
