The Academic Decathlon team had its highest State Decathlon finish ever, placing 8th in the 40-team event, held March 9-10 at ASU West.  Conner Wade placed 6th overall in the Honors scoring, earning 8,239.8 points, the highest state total ever for a South Mountain student, and only 100 points out of the top three Honors places.  He also won a Gold medal for Art, and Bronze medals in Economics and Science.  Benjamin Webb finished 7th overall in the Varsity division.

The team also had an impressive Super Quiz Relay performance, finishing with 33 points, and tied for fourth with Seton Catholic, just three correct questions out of second.  Coach Todd Decker admits that “we missed three or four fairly easy questions.”  But the Jaguars beat Mesa Mountain View, which means a lot.

“They are the defending state champion, and they win state 75% of the time.  This is the second time in the past three years that we have finished ahead of Mountain View in the Super Quiz Relay.”

Mesa Red Mountain won the Decathlon ahead of Canyon del Oro and Mesa Mountain View, to qualify for the Nationals.
