Carl Hayden Students Qualify for All-State Band

Three Carl Hayden students made it into the All-State Band, March 8-9 at Gilbert High School.   Maribel Hernandez on flute; Erik Barboza on Tuba and Jennifer Vasquez on percussion were the only Phoenix Union students selected for this prestigious group of musicians.   They will now rehearse and perform with the Arizona All-State band on April 18th – 20th at NAU.  The concert will be Saturday, April 20.

To make All State – the students must first audition and participate in their All Region band.  There are at ten different regions in the state of Arizona.  For the audition, students perform their prepared audition music to judges that sit behind a screen, insuring that the students are being judged solely on their musical abilities.  To give you an idea of the difficulty making state, there were 101 flutists that auditioned, and only 12 are taken for the band.  Hernandez was 4th flute.  Barboza competed against 39 tuba players, and eight were selected.  Vasquez competed against 53 percussionists, and eight were chosen.

“This is the first time that I know of in Carl Hayden history, that we had students accepted in to the Arizona All-State Band,” Band Director Rebecca Grace said. “This is an incredibly competitive audition, and for our students to be accepted, two of them having never taken private lessons, is such a huge accomplishment for them.”

A fourth student to audition, Karen Lopez, is just a sophomore and has only been playing French horn since November.
