South Academic Decathlon Leads PUHSD to State

South Mountain’s Academic Decathlon team leads a seven-team Phoenix Union contingent to the 40-team State Academic Decathlon, March 8-9 at the ASU West campus.  South won the Region II Academic Decathlon for the second year in a row, edging neighborhood rival, Cesar Chavez, February 1-2.    Each of the nine team members earned a four-year scholarship for an in-state university.  The Jaguars were led by senior Connor Wade, who  was the overall 10-event scoring leader in the 27-team event, winning 10 medals, eight gold, in the Honors Division Anto George had the fourth-best overall score with 6,696 points, and went six-for-six answering Super Quiz Relay questions.  Benjamin Webb finished second in overall points among Varsity Division competitors.   Under Coach Todd Decker, the Jaguars qualified for the State Decathlon   for the 22nd time in 23 years.  They are currently ranked seventh in the state.
