The Laveen Baseball Classic, which started at Cesar Chavez, has developed into a first-rate tournament to kick off the baseball season.  This year, February 21-23, the field was expanded to 20 teams from 16, and diamonds at Chavez, Betty Fairfax and Alhambra were used.   A rainout day and busy grounds crews helped the teams each play four games, however the format was changed to that the winners were determined by overall run differential.  The Division I winner was Mesa Westwood, with a 4-0 record, although St. Mary’s and Trevor Browne were also 4-0, but fell short in the “runs allowed” category Campo Verde won the Division II title.   Nine Phoenix Union teams participated.  Alhambra and North both went 2-2.      This tournament is organized by Chavez coach Sergio Acosta and Fairfax coach Armando Tellez.
