South Mountain Wins Region Academic Decathlon

Phoenix Union continues to dominate in its Academic Decathlon Region (II).  A record-seven PUHSD schools qualified for the State Decathlon, breaking last year’s high mark of five state-qualifying teams at the Region Decathlon, February 1-2 at Goldwater High School. 



South Mountain won the Region Decathlon for the second year in a row, edging second place Cesar Chavez.  Also qualifying for state were Alhambra (4th place and named Most Improved Team), 5th place Maryvale; 7th place Bioscience; 9th place Betty Fairfax and 10th place Central.   That is seven schools in the top 10 of the 27-school regional.  In fact, 10 of the top 13 scoring teams were from Phoenix Union.   Camelback placed 11th, and is a second alternate for the State Decathlon.    Phoenix Union schools have won the Region II Academic Decathlon 10 of the last 11 years.   South’s two titles in the last two years followed two consecutive titles by Cesar Chavez.
