Carl Hayden Wins Boys Basketball Tournament

Carl Hayden won the 16-team Phoenix Union Holiday Boys Basketball Classic, January 2-5 at Betty Fairfax High School.  The Falcons beat North in the championship game, 57-51, and marched to the finals with wins over Amphitheatre, Westview and top-ranked and unbeaten Cesar Chavez.  Hayden ran its record to 12-4, and the performance vaulted the Falcons into the Arizona Republic’s Top 10 Division I schools.  Hayden has won more games this season than in the last two combined.  Amadou Gueye, a 6-4 junior was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.  Bryant Ayers, who scored 23 points in the championship game and Jordan Natt made the all-tournament team.  Coach Argie Rhymes said it was the first holiday tournament championship for the school in a decade.
