Principal Dr. Zachary Muñoz has been selected as a finalist in the 2013 Rodel Exemplary Principal Initiative.  He was recognized at a Rodel Foundation reception, December 12.

Exemplary Principals have a two year commitment to mentor three Aspiring Principals. Aspiring Principals are educators currently holding teaching positions or other certified positions in a school and have the ultimate goal of becoming a school principal. Exemplary Principals provide professional development seminars to Aspiring Principals during their first year covering the program’s four traits: Collaborative School Environment; Family and Community Involvement; Professional Learning and High Expectations.

Muñoz has been a principal at Phoenix Union since 2005, and has been the Betty Fairfax principal since the school opened in 2007.  In state accountability measurements, the school moved from a “C” to a “B” last year, showing a 10 point increase in overall growth percentile and 14-point jump in math growth.  Fairfax improved dramatically in all three AIMS exams, with its 10th graders improving 16 percentage points in math.  Fairfax also implemented a school-wide International Baccalaureate program in 2010-11.
