Carl Hayden Started FIRST LEGO

Carl Hayden started the first FIRST LEGO League in Arizona ten years ago.  FIRST stands for ‘For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology,’  the same organization that runs the high school robotics competitions.   On December 1, the Falcon Robotics club and many campus volunteers hosted one of now 13 regional events from Sierra Vista to Flagstaff.  The LEGO League is a robotics competition for students age 9-14, designed to ignite an enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math.    The Hayden National Honor Society, Spanish NHS, Blue Planet Society students along with alumni, industry representatives and teachers made up the 100 volunteers and 30 judges.  Forty teams representing the different regions qualified for the state championship tournament, December 8 at ASU, where the Falcon Robotics assisted with the event.

This year’s theme was called Senior Solutions, in which students were challenged to improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected in their communities.
