Matt Bejar finished 11th in the Individual State Chess Championships, November 16-17 at Rio Rico.   The Bruins had six individuals qualify for the 64-person tournament, the most ever.    Bejar, Martin Cruz, Jose Moreno, Sergio Velasquez, Moses Velasco and Jose Peregrina all qualified by being in the top 16 of their region.  It was a break-out season for Trevor Browne’s Chess team, finishing second in its 14-team region, 7th in the 22-team State Team Championships.  There are 49 schools that compete in AIA Chess, and some 425 students.  Browne, which has one of the largest chess teams with 19 students, had never sent more than two players to the individual championships.  The Bruins are coached by Adam Moukad.
