Khanh Phan finished in 7th place at the AIA Individual Chess Championships, November 16-17 at Rio Rico, the highest of any Phoenix Union player.  Esmeraelda Jimenez also competed at the event, which brings the top 16 players from each of four regions in the state.

“It was one of the strongest fields that I have seen and our players competed and conducted themselves like champions.  At least 12 of the top 64 players in the state were from Phoenix Union schools.  I look forward to next year when Khanh who is now the highest-rated player that I have coached at Alhambra will get another shot at taking the big prize,” coach Barry Wilder said.
